Interest Groups

2017 – 2018 Interest Groups

  • Bridge with Friends: 4th Tuesday, 7:00 pm.  This group is for intermediate level players who enjoy playing bridge with no pressure, just having fun and enjoying a good snack. We meet monthly September through May (except December) at different members’ homes.
  • Done in a Day : This group serves the community via one-day projects representing AAUW. It gives us some publicity and we have fun getting to know each other a little better. Last year’s projects ranged from a day at the Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build, a shift helping at the Shelterhouse Resale store and a fun session at the Diaper Alliance bundling diapers. Suggestions are welcome! You may participate in one event or all.
  • Explorers: 2nd Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. We explore a wide range of subjects in Midland and nearby communities, and usually end with lunch and discussion.
  • Gardening for Fun: 4th Wednesday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. A low-key gardening group that offers opportunities for information exchange, field trips, visits to area gardens and gardening centers, as well as local speakers who are gardening experts. Times may vary depending on activity.
  • Independent Readers: One meeting only in October. Several members prepare a ballot of recent fiction and non-fiction titles. Members vote for about 10 or 12 books to pass every 4-5 weeks beginning in October. Each person pays the amount of approximately one book and keeps one of the titles.
  • Matinees and More: This group enjoys quality films and meets in the afternoon. Members gather based upon interest and availability of movies. A discussion may follow the movie over coffee.
  • Reading for Fun: 4th Monday at 7:00 p.m. Members read recent edition hard cover books, fiction and non-fiction. Each member buys one book at the October meeting. Books are passed every 3 – 4 weeks. At the first meeting, members plan a few outings.
  • The Book Lovers: 1st Monday at 7:30 p.m. Join these wildly passionate readers who tell it as they see it about books and authors.  All opinions are respected but may be challenged.  Fun is the game and hearing what others have to say about a book you may love or hate invites a lively discussion. Each member puts a book into the rotation; books are passed on a regular schedule.
